An annual Master of Children’s Literature Colloquium series on the creation and criticism of children’s literature contributes to the cultural life of the University and brings members of the professions and the general public to UBC. We have hosted internationally respected, award-winning creators of work for children. Among these are author Sarah Ellis, playwright Dennis Foon (founding Artistic Director of Green Thumb Theatre), young adult author Susan Juby, and author-illustrators Ian Wallace and Molly Bang.
These events have been very well attended, with audience members from across the University and outside. Scholarly colloquia have included the 2009 conversation on the semiotics of picture books, with picture book scholars Geoff Williams and Perry Nodelman. Internationally renowned folklore scholar Jack Zipes’ colloquium in March 2010 brought 100 people to UBC. In 2010, children’s literature critic and scholar Lissa Paul spoke on key words in the criticism of children’s literature. In January 2012, author Paulette Bourgeois attracted an audience of over 100.
Coming up: October 2012 colloquium with speaker Leonard Marcus, prolific children’s literature critic, interviewer of authors and illustrators, children’s book historian and curator of exhibitions.
